What You Can Learn From an Online Personality Assessment

Each of us has a unique and complex personality due to three contributing factors: genetics, environment, and behavior. What you learn from an online personality assessment can help you identify the intricacies of your unique personality and gain a clear understanding of who you are. To begin, we must examine what contributes to our personality.

3 FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO PERSONALITY

  1. GENETICS - We are born with a distinct recipe of brain chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, and others. This recipe determines our innate traits and natural tendencies. We see evidence of this when two siblings have completely different personalities though they were born to the same parents, had identical upbringings, and had similar experiences. For example, my daughter is a skilled money manager. During college she never asked for money beyond the allotment I gave her on the first of each month. My son, on the other hand, often ran dry of funds by mid-month. Both were taught money management during childhood in exactly the same way.
  2. ENVIRONMENT - Environment, to a large degree, is our childhood experiences. Where did we grow up? To what were we exposed? Was our home healthy or abusive? What education did we receive? Environment also includes traumas that we have faced—a debilitating car accident, the death of someone close to us, a cancer diagnosis, etc. At age two, my son-in-law lost his dad in a car accident. At age four, he lost his mom to a heart attack. Without doubt these experiences played a role in shaping his personality.
  3. BEHAVIOR - Behavior is how we CHOOSE to act and react. Though genetics and environment give us tendencies to behave certain ways, we do have control over our behavior. With effort and determination we can replace natural responses with intentional preferred responses, thus affecting our personalities over time. An example would be a person with an anger problem who attends anger management classes. Rather than lashing out when upset, the person learns how to maintain control. With practice and time, a personality shift occurs.

As you can see, with the above three factors in play, your personality is complex and multifaceted. Understanding your personality can be difficult as it relates to what you do, how you do it, and why you do it. But understanding who you are is crucial to building successful relationships with others—those you love, live with, and lead. When you first discover and comprehend your own personality, then you can seek to discover and comprehend the personalities of others.
